Inland Rail

Inland Rail is a 1,600km fast freight rail line, now under construction, that will connect Melbourne and Brisbane via regional Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. Macquarie Geotechnical have been undertaking geotechnical and geophysical investigations in addition to laboratory testing and construction phase services on the Inland Rail project across Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland since circa 2017.

The key objectives have included characterising subsurface conditions along the alignment, identifying problematic soils and ground conditions, and providing critical input to construction planning, project design and risk management.

Services provided:

  • Principal Contractor. Project, stakeholder and contractor management,
  • Geotechnical drilling: 350+ boreholes using auger, wash boring, casing advancing, and HQ3 coring techniques for alignment, structures, and borrow pit assessments
  • Field testing: point load testing, in-situ testing (SPT/Undisturbed tubes), ATV/OTV survey, seismic refraction surveys
  • Excavation and logging: 500+ test pits along the alignment and for borrow pit assessments
  • Laboratory testing and stabilisation trials
  • Geotechnical Factual Reporting and AGS Data Delivery
